What is Linux:
Linux is an operating system as Windows or OS/X or Unix. Linux is based on the Unix Operating system. It is unlike any other operating system. it is FREE software and Open source (which means you can download it and run it on your computer). Not only that, You can download the source code for Linux and modify it the way you always wanted your operating system to run.
Linux is licensed under the Free Software Foundation, GNU project, General Public License. most software which runs on Linux is also free because of this foundation and GNU.
Linux runs on many pieces of hardware and comes in a variety of distributions (many software houses have their own distribution - they modify the install package, or other portions of Linux).
In order to determine which distribution is right for you: please go to Http://www.distrowatch.com.
A couple of the more popular are Ubuntu, Red Hat, Fedora, Suse and Knoppix.
